I recently spotted a post on facebook, a blogger challenge to design your own sign and it got me thinking. If there was one sign I could make, what would it be? A sign to warn people to knock before entering? I’m a fan of having some space. Or maybe something advising to Bring Prosecco? Or maybe something a bit more motivational?
I have a saying though that has kept me going for years – Onwards & Upwards, I was going to have it tattooed onto my arm (I still might), I thought it would look ace on a sign. I’ve struggled with injuries and various health problems over the years, I even have a lovely chronic illness that keeps me on my toes. However, when I’ve hit a low and just want to sit and cry…well I generally sit and have the cry, get it out of my system, then I’ll dust myself off and get myself moving, Onwards & Upwards. I’ve also pushed myself in regards to my career, I even set up my own business, that definitely highlighted all self doubts as well as the late nights and the serious motivation that is required to keep moving forward! Again, out came Onwards & Upwards! Maybe I should just have it tattooed on!
There’s something about it that just gets me off the rear end and moving again. I’ve known it all my life, I’m sure I heard it plenty growing up as it’s quite a common thing to say. It’s held true, I’ve achieved so much, just by pushing myself onwards that bit more. Or getting up. It just reminds me that more lies ahead, that you have to keep striving forward. The upwards keeps me aiming to get better and better every time.
So if I had to create a sign, it would definitely have to include Onwards & Upwards. Plus I’m a fan of the night sky, so we have that in the background. Add in some shapes and I’m happy! It sort of reminds me of the various graphic novels I’ve read over the years. I really like a mix of homeware accessories. I’ve signs reminding me that life is an adventure, or collages of friends hanging on the walls, painted metal chests and odd little ornaments. I think this sign would have to live above my desk I reckon, or maybe above the bed? I’m unsure what size it should be – what do you think, maybe an A4 or bigger?
So there you have it, this post is an entry into the #MyCustomSign www.smartsign.com blogger challenge. I like it, what do you reckon? What would be your sign? Have you ever made your own custom sign? Have you any tips on designing signs?
